Custom Printing Options: Die Cutting
July 16, 2008
Color Printing Wholesale is one of the premium sites that offer different custom printing options that you can choose from. However, I feel that many of these options are still unfamiliar to design newbies. That’s why I’ll dedicate some of my posts to enlighten people on the different things that they can do with their custom prints. Let’s start with this week’s topic, die cutting.
What is die cutting and how is it done?
Die cutting is a manufacturing process using sharp blades to form your prints into your desired shape.
The blade is bent into the desired shape and mounted to a strong backing. The material to be cut is then placed on a flat surface after which a die is pressed onto the material. A single die can cut one piece of material or it can cut multiple layers depending on your orders.
To better visualize how die-cutting works, just imagine a cookie cutter that is capable of cutting out a potentially infinite amount of prints. Each print will be exactly the same shape and size.
Die cutting is an easier and faster alternative to cutting out your prints by hand. The use of scissors takes time and patience. It is also hard to replicate the same perfect shape over and over again.
Trivia: Die cut shapes are also called “blanks” since these pieces are usually finished and decorated before being sold.
What are the substrates that you can die cut?
The number of materials that you can die cut is limitless. Here are some of them:
- Self-adhesive rubber
- Sheet magnet
- Foil
- Static cling vinyl
- Fabric
- Felt
- Thin metal
- Paper wood
- Heat and shrink plastic
- Poly foam
- Sponge
- Leather
- Faux fur
